"I’ve been advocating against the discrimination of transsexual women on televised drag competitions for over a decade. It is a deeply personal subject for me, as drag literally saved my life. It kept a roof over my head when no one else in the Bible belt would hire a young, awkward transsexual woman like myself. So it should be no surprise that I absolutely advocated with every ounce of emotion in me. Over the years, I’ve been told that I “just sound bitter” countless times. Obviously this is an attempt to belittle my cause and gaslight me. When you have no sound argument, attack a persons character. And that’s what people did for years. The fact of the matter is that I WAS angry that this was allowed to go on for so long. And after over a decade with no change, I WAS bitter about it. We should never feel ashamed of the emotions that make us human being. So, in an attempt to turn a negative into a positive, reclaim those hurtful words hurled at me, and give the people what they clearly wanted… I channeled that emotion into a new drag persona.
